The Critical Role of Contractor Management in Construction

Did you know that managing contractors is just as important as managing your own staff? There are several reasons why as follows:

  • The duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act requires employers to provide a duty of care for their employees and those working on their behalf.

  • As well as contractors, visitors, and members of the public are all entitled to be protected in and around your areas of control.

  • Enforcing authorities, quite rightly, take a dim view of businesses that injure persons outside their employee base. If people are on your premises or acting on your behalf it is imperative you take responsibility for their safety.

  • If you injure or, worse, kill someone outside your employment, expect the law to come down heavily on you—serious consequences can even include jail time!

  • The law suggests you should review your controls periodically.

There are numerous examples in the press almost every month of companies facing severe penalties for failing to protect these groups. So, make sure you’re up to date on the law and don’t wait to test your contractor controls in court.
